The Detroit Red Wings have just won their second Stanley Cup in franchise history.
The Washington Capitals have just lost to the Detroit Red Sox in the opening round of the playoffs.
Now the Capitals and Capitals Game, a series of games featuring the two teams, is upon us.
With that in mind, the Capitals will be on the front page of The Sport Book this weekend, with a new look, new team, new fans, new rivalry and a new rivalry.
The first of two NHL Playoff matchups between the Capitals, and the Capitals Game are set for Friday night at Verizon Center.
The game, the third of four, is expected to be a very close contest with the Capitals leading the series 1-0.
The two teams have played each other twice, including the first of those games in 2015.
Here’s a look at how the two sides will fare this weekend: Capitals Game: The Capitals have had two successful playoff seasons, winning the Stanley Cup and also making the post-season in 2017.
The Caps won a Presidents’ Trophy in 2016 and were a finalist in 2017, with both teams winning the Metropolitan Division title.
The Capitals won a first-round series with the Red Wings in 2014, and again in 2015, but they were swept by the Red Sox and fell to the New York Rangers in the second round.
The Red Wings then lost in the first round of last year’s playoffs to the Penguins.
Washington will look to rebound from that loss to the Red Wing, who defeated the Capitals 4-2 in overtime on Saturday.
Washington was looking to get back into the postseason for the first time since 2007 when they beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3 in overtime.
That win over the Lightning was a franchise-record series record for the Caps, which was also the longest streak by a Washington team to win in the post season.
Washington also defeated the Bruins 4-1 in the Eastern Conference Final.
The last time Washington defeated the Penguins in the conference finals was back in 2005.
The Penguins are now 11-6-3 against Washington in post-seasons.
The Pens are 8-5-1 against Washington this season.
The second game of the series will be Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Verizon.
Caps Game: Washington will be looking to keep the momentum going after their win over Pittsburgh in the 2015 Eastern Conference Finals.
The win over Boston gave the Caps a chance to move past the Bruins and into the final four of the Stanley Cups.
The series ended with the Bruins winning Game 7 on a goal by Tomas Plekanec, and Washington won the game on the power play.
The Panthers lost in Game 7, but the Capitals went on to win the Stanley Series.
Washington will be back in action on Sunday, March 5, as they host the Detroit Lions.
It will be a rematch of Game 5 between the Caps and Capitals.
The first of the two games is set for 8:00 a.m., with a broadcast on NBC Sports Network.
Capitals Game 2: The next game of this series is Saturday at 6:00p.m.; the first game will be 8:30 a.b.m and the second game will start at 7 p.c.
The teams have split the series two times, with Washington winning Game 4 in 2014 and the Penguins winning Game 6 in 2005, both in the Metropolitan division.
Washington won Game 7 in 2005 by a score of 3-2.
The rivalry is on again this year with a rematch scheduled for Sunday, February 9, at 8:15 p.p.
Both teams are coming off a playoff loss to Pittsburgh.
Washington defeated Pittsburgh in Game 5 of the Eastern conference finals in the regular season, but then lost Game 6 to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Bruins then defeated the Caps in Game 6 of the conference final.
Last year, Washington was able to defeat the Panthers in Game 1 of the regular-season finale, but lost Game 2 to the Pens in Game 3.
The NHL’s Capitals have not lost in regulation in four seasons and have won four of their last five.
Washington has won two playoff series against Pittsburgh in five years, including a two-game sweep in the 2017 Eastern Conference Semifinals.
The team won Game 5 last year, which set up a playoff game in Game 4.
This season, the Caps are coming into the series with a winning record in five of their past six playoff games, including two victories over the Penguins and a Game 7 win in Game 2.
Capitals vs. Capitals is a doubleheader that will be broadcast live on NBCSN, NBC Sports Live Extra and Sportsnet World, plus a special edition of The Sports Corner on NBC.
